Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed—over two years after President Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Also called Freedom Day and Jubilee Day, Juneteenth is a celebration of African American history, culture, and the abiding spirit of community.
