NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 4, 2024) – Nashville Children’s Theatre (NCT) is adding a new twist to a classic story with the world premiere of “The Gingerbread Kid,” a whimsical and pop-infused fairy tale guaranteed to enchant audiences of all ages. The musical is set to run from Saturday, Jan. 27, to Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024.
This production features music by award-winning songwriter and producer Jodi Marr (collaborating with Ricky Martin, MIKA, Kristen Chenoweth, Rita Wilson, Noah Schnacky) and orchestrations by Sarah Michele Bailey. It was written, directed, and choreographed by Abe Reybold (director of NCT’s “Llama, Llama, Red Pajama,” “Pete the Cat,” and “The Elves and The Shoemaker”). “The Gingerbread Kid” showcases a journey into the world of Allspice, the magical child of a baking couple whose mischievous escapades in the kitchen set the stage for a sugary adventure. Faced with the consequences of their magical mishap, Allspice races against time, encountering a delightful ensemble of storybook favorites along the way, including Henny Penny and her gang, Little Boy Blue, and Foofinella of Little Bunny Foo Foo fame.
The production explores the themes of self-perception, impulse control, perspective-taking, communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving through classic tales.
“We are eagerly anticipating the world premiere of ‘The Gingerbread Kid’ to invite audiences to experience the joy and wonder of a timeless tale retold with a modern twist,” shared NCT Executive Artistic Director Ernie Nolan. “This is more than a show; it’s a magical journey that we can’t wait to share with our community. Not only will this production leave audience members smiling, but it is also sprinkled with valuable lessons and messages that are important for all ages to grasp and incorporate into their daily lives.”
All productions of “The Gingerbread Kid” will take place on NCT’s sensory-friendly main stage. A Sensory Room at the back of the auditorium provides patrons of all ages with tools to regulate their minds and bodies while providing the opportunity to see and hear the performance. NCT also offers a neuro-inclusive performance of “The Gingerbread Kid” on Saturday, Feb. 10, as well as an ASL-interpreted performance on Sunday, Feb. 11, to accommodate those with disabilities or sensory sensitivities.
