The Belcourt Theatre annnounces 1999, a 25-film series

Kicking off May 31 and continuing throughout June.

NASHVILLE, TENN. (May 15, 2024) — The Belcourt Theatre, Nashville’s nonprofit film center, announces 1999 its new series comprised of a curated selection of 25 films (culled from a list of over 150 deserving candidates), encapsulating the unique spirit and zeitgeist of the time, from the multiplex to the arthouse. The series opens Friday, May 31, and continues through Sunday, June 30, with selections that span genres and include both 35mm and digital formats. Throughout the series, audiences will also have opportunities to engage deeper with the films through special introductions, discussions, and activities.

“1999 is a year in cinema that’s well-regarded, and with good reason. We'd been eyeing it since our 1973 series last year. What started as a list of hundreds was whittled down to a mere 25, and most Belcourt staff provided input,” said Toby Leonard, the Belcourt’s programming director. “What resulted is this massive series, but really, there could have been two more 25-film series culled from the year.”

While all film tickets are available individually at the Belcourt’s regular prices, passes for the full series are also available ($200/$150 Belcourt members), as well as ticket 5-packs ($45/$35 members). And in the spirit of the ‘90s, special series stickers will be on sale.

1999
Throughout June 2024

Programmer’s Note: There is no shortage of films that really should be included here. We could easily fill two more 25-film series from the leftovers. It was that good of a year.

Other factors such as rights issues, print condition and lack of availability played into some of our more glaring omissions, of which there are plenty. Additionally, some films released in 1999 had their festival premieres in 1998. Likewise, others had their festival premieres in 1999 and opened in 2000. We’ve taken license as we’ve seen fit.

About the Belcourt Theatre

The Belcourt Theatre is Nashville’s nonprofit film center, a cultural institution that engages, enriches and educates audiences through innovative film programming in our theatre, our community, and beyond. Housed in Nashville’s only neighborhood theatre, the Belcourt presents the best of independent, documentary, world and repertory cinema 365 days a year, while promoting visual literacy and providing opportunities for people of all ages to experience the power of film. First opened in 1925 as a silent movie house, the theatre was home to the Grand Ole Opry from 1934-35. The theatre reopened as a nonprofit art house in 1999. The Belcourt Theatre is funded in part by Metro Arts: Nashville Office of Arts & Culture and the Tennessee Arts Commissio, and is grateful for their support of our nonprofit mission. Repertory film programming is generously funded in part by Nina and H.G. Webb, who provide visionary support for the Belcourt Theatre.
