Nashville, TN, January 12 - TWISTER is a daylong event presented by Adventure Science Center aimed to inform, motivate, and empower middle and high school individuals who identify as girls in grades 7th-12th to pursue careers in STEAM.
Since launching in 2003, TWISTER has impacted more than 1,450 young women and over 400 professional women have volunteered as presenters. Each year the conference continued to increase in participants until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020; leaving TWISTER postponed in 2021 and again in 2022.
Throughout the day, registrants will hear from a wide variety of esteemed presenters like the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Heather Schwartz, from the Nashville Zoo and Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, Dr. Larisa R.G. DeSantis, from Vanderbilt. For examples of what to expect, here are a few sessions from previous years "Beautiful Insects and Deadly Pests," "Suminagashi Paper Marbling," and "A Day in the Life of a Software Designer."
The cost of admission is $20 per student and includes:
- Four, 55-minute sessions chosen by the participant
- Hands-on, real-life STEAM activities
- Catered lunch
- Breakout sessions with like-minded middle & high school teens
- Networking opportunities with professional women in STEAM careers
- Two general admission tickets to Adventure Science Center for future use
WiTT, Women in Technology of Tennessee, will be rewarding two scholarships to Tennessee high school students, with preference given to those pursuing technology-related careers. The winning award will be $5,000 with the runner-up receiving $2,500. Scholarship recipients will be introduced and awarded by WITT representatives during TWISTER.
